Aerial LiDAR for Leak Detection and Emissions Reduction in the Distribution Environment

This presentation details SoCalGas’s experience using helicopter-mounted LiDAR technology to detect emissions. It highlights the many benefits of this technology in the distribution environment, such as hyper-localization. These capabilities enable workflow modifications that improve labor efficacy. SoCalGas utilizes this technology to supplement compliance leak surveys to reduce methane emissions. Over three years, this approach has reduced emissions by an estimated 570 million cubic feet. The presentation will also provide insights into the future of aerial LiDAR technology.

Field Validation of Aerial Gas Mapping LiDAR in Gas Distribution Systems

As part of an ongoing effort to validate methane detection technologies within the natural gas distribution sector, NYSEARCH partnered with local distribution companies to conduct field validation of the commercially available Aerial Gas Mapping LiDAR technology developed by Bridger Photonics. This presentation will detail the test methodology, provide high-level results, and offer insights into effectively applying this technology in distribution surveys.
