Challenge

Diversified Energy needed a scalable, accurate way to detect methane emissions across a large, aging asset base. Traditional ground-based methods were slow, labor-intensive, and missed critical leaks.

Solution

Diversified Energy partnered with Bridger Photonics to create a multi-year program leveraging aerial Gas Mapping LiDAR™ (GML) for emissions detection across all production and distribution facilities.

About Diversified Energy

Diversified Energy Company PLC is a leading natural gas producer headquartered in Birmingham, AL, with more than 1,600 employees. The company manages a vast and growing asset base across multiple regions and has committed $15 million annually to methane reduction initiatives as part of its broader environmental strategy.

The Challenge

Diversified Energy faced increasing pressure to detect and reduce methane emissions efficiently across thousands of assets. The legacy approach (manual ground-based inspection) was slow, labor-intensive, and unable to catch all emission sources.
To reach their goal of a 30% reduction in methane emissions by 2026, Diversified needed better data, faster detection cycles, and a method that could scale.

The Solution

Diversified Energy partnered with Bridger Photonics to create a multi-year program leveraging aerial Gas Mapping LiDAR for emissions detection across all production and distribution facilities, beginning with the Appalachian region.

With Gas Mapping LiDAR, Diversified achieved:

  • High-sensitivity methane detection well below 500 ppm
  • Faster identification and prioritization of leaks
  • Complete, quantifiable emissions data at scale
  • Efficient coverage of regions that previously required significant manual labor
  • Detection of leaks that traditional methods often missed

Field trials validated the impact, leading Diversified to commit $9 million over three years to expand the aerial scanning program company wide.

The Results

The partnership delivered clear operational and environmental benefits:

  • 75% faster emissions detection, accelerating repair cycles
  • More accurate and complete emissions data, driving better decision-making
  • Expanded LiDAR program funded through a multi-year, multi-million-dollar commitment
  • Strong alignment with their path toward 30% emissions reduction by 2026
  • Strengthened readiness for regulatory requirements and ESG reporting

The investment reflects Diversified Energy’s commitment to environmental leadership and a long-term plan to reach net-zero by 2040.
