How Much Methane Did Bridger Photonics Detect in 2022?

Gas Mapping LiDAR's 2022 Emissions Detected

At the beginning of 2023, we shared that our Gas Mapping LiDAR™ detected an aggregate emission rate of 560,000 kg/hr in 2022. If we assume those emitters detected would have run continuously for an entire year, that equates to enabling the reduction of roughly 4.9 million metric tons of methane for the year.

It’s important to note that this simple annualization does not accurately represent total emissions mitigated due to the intermittent nature of some emissions, the fact that some emissions are normal operating process emissions, and other factors. As a community, we don’t yet have the information needed for a more accurate estimate.

However, the rough estimate allows us to start wrapping our heads around the “order of magnitude” impact that we are having on emissions reduction—and hats off to our clients for mitigating these emissions!

In 2022, Bridger Photonics detected an emission rate of over 560,000 kg/hr of methane. This equates to potential emissions reduction of:

4.9 million metric tons of methane

4.9 million metric tons of methane*

1.7 billion dollars worth of natural gas

Potential recaptured revenue of: $1.7 billion worth of natural gas†

15.4 million homes energy use

And recaptured gas to supply: 15.4 million homes' energy use for one year‡

That's the power of emissions reduction.

We’re looking forward to another year of helping operators detect, locate, and quantify methane emissions. To learn more about Gas Mapping LiDAR’s revenue potential when gas is recaptured, check out our past article on the topic.

*Assuming all emissions were persistent for the entire year. Process emissions may take more time to mitigate, and the research community does not yet have sufficient data for more accurate annualization.
†Using the 2022 average Henry Hub price of natural gas of $6.45/MMBtu (U.S. Energy Information Administration) and assumes methane detected constitutes 100% of natural gas.
